What comes through
Heading styles, paragraphs, bold and italic, bulleted and numbered lists with their nesting, links and tables. Use Word’s built-in heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2) rather than large bold text, because only real headings become # headings. Pictures do not come through: Word does not put a usable picture address on the clipboard.

How do I convert a Word document to Markdown?
Open the document in Word, select what you want (Ctrl or ⌘ + A for everything), copy it, and paste it into the box on this page. The Markdown appears on the right. Copy it or download a .md file.
Can I upload a .docx file?
Not on this page. It works from the clipboard, so open the file in Word, Pages or Google Docs and copy from there. Nothing leaves your computer that way.
What comes through from Word?
Heading styles become # headings, bulleted and numbered lists become Markdown lists with their nesting, bold and italic are kept, links keep their address, and tables become pipe tables with the first row as the header.
What does not come through?
Pictures, because Word does not put a usable picture address on the clipboard. Comments, tracked changes, footnotes, text boxes, page headers and footers are also left behind or flattened. Tables with merged cells are written out row by row.
Does it work with Google Docs?
Yes, paste from Google Docs the same way. Google Docs can also do it itself: File, Download, Markdown (.md).
Is my document uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in this page in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is stored.
Can it turn Markdown back into Word?
